ANNUAL REPORT
CONTINUING BENEFITS OF ABSTINENCE EDUCATION:
The insurgence of character-based abstinence education
since the mid 1990’s has contributed to a reversal of two forty-year trends:
- Teen
pregnancy and birthrates are currently at a 58 year low and down
by 25% since 1994.
- The percentage
of high school students who are sexually active has dropped
14% since 1993. This decrease translates into MILLIONS
of teens who are
NOT at risk for STDs, pregnancy, or other
negative consequences of early
sexual involvement.
- Over twenty
credible studies have documented the effectiveness of abstinence education. Both the
Centers for Disease Control and research reported
in the Journal of Adolescent Health credit increased
abstinence among teens as the major factor responsible
for lower rates of teen
pregnancy.
- A Harris Pole
found that among six age groups and three political groups,
younger respondents showed the strongest
support for abstinence over
safe-sex programs (The Washington Times,
Jan. 26, 2006 “Youths Support
Abstinence as Sex Education.”) [ more ]
