Based on a philosophy of "willingness to be held accountable," CPR has maintained effectiveness statistics since the inception of the program. These statistics measure pre- and post- levels of knowledge and attitude. Knowledge is fact based, issues such as reproductive system and STDs. Attitude indicates agreement with the concept of abstinence until marriage. Several questions on the questionnaire address each of these areas. The following table shows summary results at five representative school.

  • Privacy considerations have not allowed statistical analysis of pregnancy/disease impact within the Indianapolis metropolitan area. However, our Associate program in Gallup, New Mexico, has provided important affirmation of the effectiveness of CPR's abstinence message:
        1992 to 1993 - over 100 pregnant teens
        1993 to 1994 - 68 pregnant teens
        1994 to 1995 -- 66 pregnant teens
        1995 to 1996 - 41 pregnant teens
        1996 to 1997 -31 pregnant teens

The CPR program has been taught since 1992 in McKinley County, New Mexico.  These five-year pregnancy statistics for Gallup High School now fully reflect a high school population which has heard the CPR message from 6th through 9th grade, important affirmation that the CPR message is significantly impacting the attitudes and behavior of our young people.

Student Reaction to CPR

  • The most important empirical evidence of effectiveness is "what kids are saying". Without question, CPR faces skeptics, often adults who cannot believe that teens can be convinced that waiting is worthwhile. Yet every year we receive hundreds of comments like these:

"I have learned the physical, mental, emotional and social consequences of what sex before marriage can do."     --6th grade girl

"I've learned to save my sexuality for marriage, and the choices I make now affect my future."     --7th grade boy

"I've definitely decided not to have sex until marriage. Being stripped of my most valuable gift is not something I'll let anyone do."     --8th grade girl

"I've learned how to resist peer pressures, that you don't have to have sex to have a good relationship, what's inside is what really counts and to stand up for yourself."      --
    8th grade girl

"I've decided that abstinence really is the best way, in more ways that one. I've already set goals for myself and where I will stop with my girlfriends before I get married."     --8th grade boy

"I have learned how to date, how to control yourself and how to keep your eyes on your goals."     --7th grade boy

"I learned what the real value of sex was all about. Everyone told me I should wait until I am married for sex, but they didn't tell me why. But this program taught me that sex is special and worth waiting for. Thanks!"     -7th grade girl

"Thank you so much for coming and helping us.  This week was the perfect week for you to come.  I was in a very hard relationship until last night.  My boyfriend was very controlling and pressuring.  He would constantly ask me to have sex with him and I told him that I don't want to make any mistakes that I had before.  I told him that I have set new goals and told myself that I'm not ready.  Your coming here and teaching us about the dangers of premarital sex has made 95% of my decision that I told my boyfriend.  If it weren't for you we would probably still be together, and I would probably have given in to him.  Thank you so much."      --10th grade student

"I just wanted to say thanks for bringing us CPR.  I know that I was mixed up and confused about what to do about this whole sex thing.  But now I know I am going to stay abstinent.  You are saving lives everywhere.  I have a friend that is in 2nd period Health and because of you, she chose secondary virginity.  Before, her and her boyfriend had sex a lot.  But recently (yesterday) they talked it over and decided they didn't want their relationship based on sex.  I know you have helped many young people set their goals and stay on the path.  I enjoyed and learned most from the visual effects and the class involvement.  Thanks again for helping me and everyone else. "     --10th grade student

"I really think this is an important class.  I enjoyed having you as a teacher.  A couple weeks ago I was thinking I wanted a baby.  I thought that they would love me.  I thought that a baby would make me feel better about myself.  I have now decided that I don't want a baby.  I want to wait till later.  I now know I need to quit putting myself down saying I am fat, ugly and lots of other stuff.  Thanks for everything."     --10th grade student

"I think one of the biggest reasons teens have sex is to find an identity and someone they think really cares about them.  I happen to have a friend who has had sex for this very reason.  Her parents divorced and now she feels that neither of them love her.  I have chosen abstinence and have talked to her about her problem.  I hope that soon she will see the truth and choose not to have sex any more until marriage for herself and future."     -- 10th grade male

From School Professionals

  • An important indication of the professionalism of our program is the comments from school professionals:

"I give an A+ rating to CPR.  After seeing the results of this program, it is evident that our students have gained a better knowledge of the complexity of sexuality, while understanding the importance of good self-esteem and respect for oneself and others."     --Middle/High School Principal

"CPR meets the needs of schools for a solid abstinence teaching. We have seen a marked increase in the students' awareness of dangers of being sexually involved and a positive change in attitude toward the abstinence choice."     --Director of Student Services

"I have appreciated the frankness of your program and the caring attitude of the teachers toward the students.  I noticed several students who have been reclusive in the past open up to your program and the information they were provided."     -High School Teacher

"Our students, parents, and staff were all very impressed with the amount of knowledge, the emphasis place on abstinence, and the general presentation of the information and materials in the Creating Positive Relationships class.  The staff and parents consider this program one of the best any of us has ever seen."     --Principal
